Odisha State Prisons Department came into existence after the re-organization of States. Initially the Prisons Department consisted of only a few Circle Jails, District Jails and Sub Jails.

Established after state re-organization, Odisha State Prisons Department is renowned for its progressive reforms, including canteens, gas cooking systems, uninterrupted utilities, vocational training, and modern medical facilities. Recent innovations feature video conferencing and e-mulakats for improved communication.

In recent times, Odisha State Prisons Department has introduced Video Conferencing System between Prisons and Courts as well as e-mulakats which enables speedy communication facilities to the Undertrial prisoners/convicts.
